State Board to Vote on High School Credit Flexibility, Health Education Standards Also on Public Meeting Agenda

Friday, March 11, 2016

(Washington, DC) - The DC State Board of Education (SBOE) will hold its monthly public meeting on March 16, 2016.  The meeting will begin at 5:30pm at 441 4th Street, NW, Old Council Chambers, Washington, DC 20001.

During the meeting, the SBOE will take a final vote on regulations that would allow an application-based pathway for competency-based courses in the District’s high schools. This effort is part of a larger review of graduation requirements that SBOE and the Office of the State Superintendent of Education (OSSE) have begun.

This Public Meeting will kick off the SBOE’s outreach on the new federal Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA). ESSA delegates a significant amount of power to the states; the SBOE and OSSE will be working together to draft and finalize a state plan for implementation in the 2017-2018 school year. The State Board is reviewing best practices around accountability measures that could be considered under the new state plan.

The SBOE and OSSE have conducted significant public outreach for the proposed Health Education Standards. Through multiple town halls across the city, targeted LEA/teacher feedback sessions and student forums, SBOE has educated and engaged the residents of the District through inclusive policy-making. The proposed Health Education Standards will empower District students with skills on issues like bullying, behavioral and sexual health, and nutrition. At this Public Meeting, the SBOE will hear directly from teachers about the potential impact of the revised standards.

Individuals and representatives of organizations who wish to comment at a public meeting are asked to notify Board staff in advance by phone at (202) 741-0888 or by email at [email protected]. Individuals should provide their names, addresses, telephone numbers, and organizational affiliation, if any, by the close of business the Monday prior to the meeting and bring fifteen (15) copies of their written statements with them to the meeting and are encouraged to submit one (1) electronic copy in advance.
