Washington, DC - On Tuesday, April 3, 2018, the DC State Board of Education (SBOE) will hold its next Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) Task Force meeting at 6:00 p.m. in Room 1117 at 441 4th St NW. Representatives from the Office of the State Superintendent of Education (OSSE) will solicit feedback from task force members on the proposed design of the new school report card and offer training on a new toolkit. Task force members will then break out into committee work related to leadership, academic rigor, school resources and funding equity, and school climate.
The public is welcome to attend all task force meetings. However, individuals and representatives of organizations are not permitted to speak or participate during task force sessions. District residents may stay involved and provide input throughout this process in a variety of ways. Individuals and representatives of organizations may submit written testimony or information for consideration by the task force by emailing [email protected]. The task force meeting will be streamed live via Periscope for those community members who are unable to attend in person.
On Wednesday, April 4, 2018, the SBOE will hold its monthly working session at 5:00 p.m. in Room 1114 at 441 4th Street NW. The SBOE will hear a report from the recently held Family Engagement Summit and an overview of the recently released Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS).
A team spearheaded by the SBOE attended the U.S. Department of Education's Family Engagement Summit: Powered by Teach to Lead in Baltimore, MD earlier this month. The Summit convened teachers, family members, and other school and community stakeholders to share best practices and action plans to benefit students and schools. Dr. Lannette Woodruff, Ward 4 representative and chair of the SBOE ESSA Task Force, led the team which presented a plan to share information with families in DC’s wards 7 and 8 and setup an ongoing communication channel between families and OSSE. Team members included Melissa Bryant, Director of Culture at DC Scholars Stanton Academy; Maya Martin, Executive Director for Parents Amplifying Voices in Education (PAVE); Sharona Robinson, Community Action Team Coordinator Wards 7 & 8 for DC Public Schools; and Cassi Zeledon, Kindergarten Individualized Learning Specialist for Rocketship Public Charter School.
Representatives from OSSE will share trends and takeaways from the Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS) released last month. The YRBS is a survey of health-risk behaviors conducted in middle and high schools every two years in Washington, DC and around the United States, covering behaviors that contribute to unintentional injuries and violence, tobacco use, alcohol and other drug use, sexual risk behaviors, unhealthy dietary behaviors and physical inactivity.
The public is welcome to attend the working session. However, individuals and representatives of organizations are not permitted to speak or participate during the working session. Individuals and representatives of organizations may submit written testimony for consideration by the SBOE. Written testimony may also be submitted by email at [email protected].
