Washington, DC - The DC State Board of Education (SBOE) will hold its regular monthly working session on Wednesday, November 7 at 5 pm in Room 1114 at 441 Fourth St. NW. At the working session, State Board members will continue their work related to teacher retention and welcome the newly nominated Deputy Mayor for Education, Paul Kihn. Representatives that attended the Annual Meeting of the National Association of State Boards of Education (NASBE) will share what they learned during the three-day conference as well. The working session will be streamed live via Periscope for community members who are unable to attend in person.
Paul Kihn was nominated in September by Mayor Bowser to serve as Deputy Mayor for Education. State Board members look forward to meeting with Mr. Kihn to learn more about his vision for the District of Columbia Public Schools (DCPS) and public charter schools as he settles in to his new role.
SBOE has been working to compile information on teacher retention in the District of Columbia for a number of years, including commissioning a report by researcher Mary Levy. At SBOE’s October 24 public meeting, over 15 witnesses shared their experience on this issue. SBOE continues its work on teacher retention, working to identify better ways to collect and use data so that the needs of all teachers are met. State Board members will discuss what additional data are needed and begin to create solutions that will help support the growth of educators.
While working sessions are open to the public, individuals and representatives of organizations are not permitted to speak or participate. However, individuals and representatives of organizations may submit written testimony for consideration by the State Board. Written testimony must be submitted by email at [email protected] at least 48 hours in advance of the meeting.
