Office of the Student Advocate supports students, parents, and families in their advocacy through parent education, one-on-one coaching, resource supports, and trainings in order to amplify the voices of families.

In January 2021 the State Board surveyed over 1,000 public-school teachers in an effort to understand their thoughts & experiences during virtual learning. 

The State Board, in partnership with the Office of the State Superintendent of Education (OSSE), has begun its review and update of the District’s social studies standards. 

There are nine members on the DC State Board of Education who are elected by voters within the District. Board members’ terms are four years and are staggered so no more than five board members are selected in any one election.

The State Board is responsible for approving state-level regulations, including state academic standards and District high school graduation requirements. An independent agency, the SBOE advises OSSE on all educational matters.
