Washington, DC - The DC State Board of Education (SBOE) has announced it will co-host a series of upcoming community meetings in all eight wards in the District to collect community input on the Every Student Succeed Act (ESSA) with the Office of the State Superintendent for Education (OSSE). The SBOE needs to hear from District residents during these February meetings on the final draft plan of the accountability portion of ESSA released yesterday for public comment by OSSE.
ESSA replaces No Child Left Behind (NCLB) and gives the District more flexibility in advancing educational excellence and providing assistance to schools so that each student has the opportunity for success. The draft plan outlines how schools will put ESSA’s requirements into action, outlining statewide strategies for public education and specifically referencing how the District will support vulnerable groups of students and define quality schools.
Between Jan. 31 and March 3, community members are encouraged to review the final draft plan and submit public comments here. During the month of February, State Board members will engage with the public to hear hearing reactions on the final draft plan during community-based meetings in every ward in the District.
