Washington, DC - The DC State Board of Education (SBOE) will hold its monthly public meeting on Wednesday, May 17, 2017 at 5:30 pm in the Old Council Chambers at 441 4th Street NW. State Board members will vote to create an ESSA Advisory Task Force that will help advise the SBOE over the next year. The SBOE is committed to continuing to involve broad community input in the decision making related to the Every Student Succeeds Act.
With the creation of this new task force, the State Board will conduct community roundtables and focus groups to gather input on the remaining ESSA accountability plan measures, pilot studies, and school report cards from essential District education stakeholders. In March, the State Board voted to approve the new state accountability plan drafted by the Office of the State Superintendent of Education (OSSE). Work on the plan is not completed, however. The plan approved by the SBOE included provisions for the inclusion of additional measures on items like high school academic growth, school climate, and well-rounded education once those measures were fully explored and piloted.
“We want to ensure as much diverse stakeholder engagement as possible over the next phase of this implementation,” said Karen Williams, President of the State Board of Education. “This task force will consist of three SBOE representatives and a variety of participants including DC Public/Public Charter school students and teachers, two parent representatives, business representatives, national education experts, and a representative from the Office of the State Superintendent of Education (OSSE).”
Additionally, State Board members will hear a presentation from OSSE on the standard-setting process for the DC Science assessment. Each spring, high school biology students and all students in grades 5 and 8 take this assessment. OSSE intends to release the results of the 2016 exam this summer. The State Board welcomes feedback from District science teachers and education stakeholders regarding this assessment. Please share your comments by emailing us at [email protected].
Individuals and representatives of organizations who wish to comment at a public meeting are asked to notify Board staff in advance by phone at (202) 741-0888 or by email at [email protected]. Individuals should furnish their names, addresses, telephone numbers, and organizational affiliation, if any, by the close of business on Monday, May 15, 2017 and should submit one (1) electronic copy of their testimony in advance for the permanent record.
