Washington, DC - The DC State Board of Education (SBOE) will hold its regular monthly working session on Wednesday, December 5 at 5 pm in Room 1114 at 441 Fourth St. NW. State Board members will continue their work related to teacher and principal retention and discuss the new DC school report card that will debut soon. The working session will be streamed live via Periscope for community members who are unable to attend in person.
Earlier this week, the SBOE co-hosted a public form with EmpowerEd on teacher and principal retention in District public schools, convening more than 100 students, teachers, principals, policymakers, and community members to design systemic solutions to the issues that both the traditional and public charter sectors are facing. The report that we commissioned from independent researcher Mary Levy provided us with data, but developing solutions requires that educators, parents, school leadership, and policymakers work together. State Board members will discuss the strategies developed at the forum and the public input process on this vital issue in December.
Built in partnership with families and community stakeholders, the new citywide school report card will be released soon. This tool represents an important step towards a more transparent, equitable public education system for students. State Board members will discuss upcoming engagement opportunities to assist community members in using this new tool.

About the SBOE
The DC State Board of Education is an independent agency within the Government of the District of Columbia that advises the Office of the State Superintendent of Education (OSSE), the District’s state education agency. The State Board is comprised of nine elected representatives, each representing their respective wards, with one member representing DC at large, and two appointed student representatives. The State Board approves statewide education policies and sets academic standards, while OSSE oversees education within the District and manages federal education funding.
