Washington, DC - The D.C. State Board of Education (SBOE) will hold its regular monthly working session on Wednesday, May 1, 2019 at 5 pm in Room 1114 at 441 Fourth St. NW. State Board members will hear an update on the work of its Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) Task Force and share updates from their monthly working group meetings. The working session will be streamed live via Periscope for community members who are unable to attend in person.
Earlier this month, task force members welcomed representatives from the Learning Policy Institute (LPI) and Education Counsel to learn more about school climate measures and recent work in other states. Representatives from the Office of the State Superintendent of Education (OSSE) provided an update on school climate as it relates to the District’s accountability framework.
Representing residents from all eight wards of the city, SBOE has conducted community and stakeholder engagement work related to ESSA since the creation of the District’s state ESSA plan in 2017. The task force will make recommendations to the State Board on equity in education in the subject areas of academic rigor, leadership, and school resources and funding in June 2019.
Working groups provide an opportunity for members to discuss key issues and focus areas that the State Board has identified as priorities for 2019. These discussions provide members the opportunity to share thoughts, recommendations, and potential next steps for the SBOE.
