SBOE Holds Final ESSA Task Force Meeting June 11

Members to finalize task force report

Washington, DC - On Tuesday, June 11, 2019, the DC State Board of Education (SBOE) will hold its next Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) Task Force meeting at 6 pm in Room 1117 at 441 Fourth St. NW. During this meeting, the task force will wind down its work on the District’s implementation of ESSA and conclude discussion on challenges and barriers to educational equity in the District of Columbia. A final report from the task force will be delivered to the State Board at this month’s public meeting on June 19, 2019.

Representing residents from all eight wards of the city, the ESSA Task Force has convened monthly for the past two years. Members include students, parents, teachers, community leaders, education agency leaders, school leaders, and nonprofit personnel who work in relevant fields. This dedicated group of education stakeholders committed to sustained community engagement related to the District’s implementation of the federal law from the start in order to solicit feedback from their constituencies.

Members of the public may attend and observe all task force meetings, but are not permitted to speak or participate during these sessions. Individuals and representatives of organizations may submit written testimony or information for consideration by the task force by emailing [email protected]. Additionally, State Board members will continue convening this month to discuss key education policy issues via working groups.

About the SBOE

The DC State Board of Education is an independent agency within the Government of the District of Columbia that advises the Office of the State Superintendent of Education (OSSE), the District’s state education agency. The State Board is comprised of nine elected representatives, each representing their respective wards, with one member representing D.C. at large, and two appointed student representatives. The State Board approves statewide education policies and sets academic standards, while OSSE oversees education within the District and manages federal education funding.
