Joe Weedon was elected to the State Board of Education to represent Ward 6 in 2014, finishing his term in 2018. On the Board, Joe has focused on efforts to ensure parents are engaged in decisions that most impact the success of our schools. He currently serves on the Board's ESSA Taskforce and previously led the Board's administrative committee.
For over a decade, Joe has been a vocal advocate for increased transparency of and public engagement in our school systems. Joe has served on the Eastern High School and Eliot-Hine Middle School Local School Advisory Teams (LSATs), the Office of the State Superintendent of Education's (OSSE) Title I Committee of Practitioners and the board of three non-profits focused on expanding after-school programming. Professionally, he has worked to promote state policy across the nation to expand early education.
Professionally, Joe serves as Executive Director of Companies for Causes, a non-profit organization working to engage socially-minded CEOs of closely held small and mid-sized companies to make a collective impact on our community. One of the organization's projects is designed to prepare students to succeed in the workplace. Overall, Joe has more than 15 years of experience in public policy and government relations focused mostly on anti-poverty and educational issues.
Joe graduated from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He earned a master's degree in political science from the University of Illinois and an MBA from the University of Maryland, College Park. Joe and his wife, Amy, are proud parents of students at his neighborhood schools, Maury Elementary School and Eliot-Hine Middle School.
