DC STATE BOARD OF EDUCATION SEEKS COMMENTS ON EFFORTS TO TURN AROUND LOW-PERFORMING SCHOOLS,

RESIDENCY VERIFICATION RULES

Washington, DC – The District of Columbia State Board of Education (State Board) will hold a public meeting on Wednesday, April 23, 2014 to review issues coming before the State Board. The following issues will be covered at this meeting:

  • Feeder Patters and Boundary Revision Briefing (DME Presentation): The Office of the Deputy Mayor for Education will brief the State Board on their recently proposed feeder pattern and school boundary proposals and will provide an update on the ongoing community engagement process.

  • ESEA Waiver Extension Request (OSSE Presentation): In advance of submitting an ESEA Waiver Extension Request, the State Board seeks an update on the implementation of the District’s ESEA Waiver. The State Board aims to provide the public with greater details on why there have been delays in the essential work required to improve the District of Columbia’s lowest performing schools. The State Board must approve revisions to the ESEA Waiver.

  • Residency Verification Rules Update (OSSE Presentation): The State Board, with responsibility for approving revised residency verification rules, will receive an update on proposed revisions to the rules prior to their release for public comment. The State Board hopes that the revised rules will provide a consistent legal framework on student residency verification in the District of Columbia.

At this meeting, the State Board will also introduce the Ombudsman for Public Education, Joyanna Smith. Acting primarily as a problem solver for complaints, disputes, and problems faced by students, parents/guardians, and educators in the District of Columbia Public Schools and public charter schools, the Office of the Ombudsman serves as a one-stop shop for the beneficiaries of public education in need of assistance. The Ombudsman can be reached at 202.741.0886 or at [email protected].

The public meeting will occur on Wednesday, April 23, 2014 at 5:30pm at the 441 4th Street NW in the Old Council Chamber. All students, parents, and educators, and community members are invited to provide testimony.

Individuals and representatives of organizations who wish to comment at the meeting are asked to notify State Board staff in advance by phone at (202) 741-0888 or by email at [email protected] and furnish their names, addresses, telephone numbers, and organizational affiliation, if any, by the close of business the Monday prior to the meeting. They should also bring fifteen (15) copies of their written statements with them to the meeting and are encouraged to submit one (1) electronic copy in advance.

The meeting will air live on District Knowledge Network (DKN) Comcast Channel 99, RCN Channel 18, and Fios Channel 12.
