Washington, DC - The DC State Board of Education (SBOE) will hold its regular monthly working session on Wednesday, September 5 at 5pm in Room 1114 at 441 Fourth St. NW. At the working session, representatives from the Office of the State Superintendent of Education (OSSE) will provide an overview of the 2017-18 Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC) assessment results for the District of Columbia and State Board members will discuss a draft strategic plan for 2019-20. The working session will be streamed live via Periscope for those community members who are unable to attend in person.
Mayor Muriel Bowser and her education team (Interim Deputy Mayor Ahnna Smith, State Superintendent Hanseul Kang, Interim DC Public Schools (DCPS) Chancellor Amanda Alexander and DC Public Charter School Board (DCPCSB) Executive Director Scott Pearson) released the PARCC results on August 16, 2018, at Bancroft Elementary School in Ward 1. Overall, the percentage of District students who are on track for the next grade level and to leave high school prepared for college and career increased since last year. The full results can be found here.
The mayor launched a search process earlier this summer for the next DCPS Chancellor, appointing a Leadership Committee to advise her on the selection and hold community meetings to gather information from residents. Deputy Mayor Smith will update the State Board on the search process and ask for input on the skills, background and values that a new chancellor must possess. More information about the process can be found at: ourschools.dc.gov.
In 2017, the State Board adopted a two year strategic plan to help guide its operations. Since then, the State Board has completed the majority of its objectives, with the remaining items on track to be completed by the end of 2018. In order to continue its focus on ensuring equity and opportunity to all students, the State Board will draft a new strategic plan that will cover 2019 and 2020. This plan will not be finalized until January 2019 after new representatives join the State Board.
SBOE staff will present a 2019 communications plan that will serve as a guide for SBOE communications strategies during the upcoming year. It will ensure that communications efforts align with the SBOE's strategic plan and guide the agency as it communicates key education information effectively to District of Columbia residents.
While working sessions are open to the public, individuals and representatives of organizations are not permitted to speak or participate. However, individuals and representatives of organizations may submit written testimony for consideration by the State Board. Written testimony must be submitted by email at [email protected] at least 48 hours in advance of the meeting.
