Update on Teacher Data Collection at ESSA Task Force Meeting

Washington, DC - On Tuesday, October 9, the DC State Board of Education (SBOE) will hold its next Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) Task Force meeting at 6 pm in Room 1117 at 441 Fourth St., NW. During this meeting, members will hear an update from TNTP on their teacher staffing data collection efforts. Additionally, representatives from the Office of the State Superintendent of Education (OSSE) will update members on the current status of ESSA state plan implementation.

In order to address ESSA’s requirement that local education agencies (LEAs) report their data on equity gaps, OSSE and TNTP established the DC Staffing Data Collaborative, which collects and manages data to help LEAs better recruit, develop, and retain effective teachers and promote equity in education in the District. TNTP is a nonprofit organization that works with schools and school districts with a specific emphasis on teacher effectiveness. Founded in 1997, TNTP runs teaching fellowship programs that recruit and train teachers and operates as a research organization studying teachers and educational outcomes for students.

At the meeting, OSSE will review the commitments the District has made in the ESSA State Plan, including the current status of the STAR framework and school report cards and the plans for future changes or additions to the accountability system, including measures of access to opportunities, school climate, and high school growth. As the state education agency (SEA) responsible for the District’s consolidated plan, OSSE developed the School Transparency and Reporting, or STAR, system. STAR is a statewide accountability system that will provide a summative ranking for all public and public charter schools.

Members of the public may attend and observe all task force meetings, but are not permitted to speak or participate during these sessions. *October 24 Public Meeting at John A. Wilson Building*
Please note that the upcoming October SBOE public meeting will be held on the fourth Wednesday of the month—October 24, 2018. This is a change from the regularly scheduled third Wednesday of every month. Additionally, the meeting will be held at 5:30 pm in Room 412 of the John A. Wilson Building at 1350 Pennsylvania Ave., NW due to the upcoming election.

About the SBOE
The DC State Board of Education is an independent agency within the Government of the District of Columbia that advises the Office of the State Superintendent of Education (OSSE), the District’s state education agency. The State Board is comprised of nine elected representatives, each representing their respective wards, with one member representing DC at large, and two appointed student representatives.
