SBOE Welcomes Expert Teacher Retention Panel at Public Meeting

To honor Black Lives Matter at School and National Women’s History Month

Washington, DC - The D.C. State Board of Education (SBOE) will hold its monthly public meeting on Wednesday, March 20, 2019, at 5:30 pm in the Old Council Chambers at 441 Fourth St. NW. During this meeting, SBOE members will welcome experts from non-profits and national associations to testify on best practices in teacher retention and data collection. The State Board is committed to continuing its work on this vital issue and looks forward to hearing from experts on how other states and districts handle teacher retention challenges.

The SBOE teacher retention panel will include the following individuals.

  • Abigail Potts, Director of College, Career, and Civic Readiness, National Association of State Boards of Education (NASBE)
  • Thomas Gentzel, Executive Director & CEO, National School Boards Association (NSBA)
  • Elizabeth Arons, CEO of Urban Schools Human Capital Academy (USHCA)

State Board members will consider three ceremonial resolutions to recognizing the outstanding leadership and accomplishments of the champions of the District of Columbia State Athletic Association basketball tournaments, the Black Lives Matter At School Week of Action, and National Women’s History Month. All meeting documents can be accessed on the SBOE information-sharing site. The public meeting will air live on District Knowledge Network (DKN) and will be streamed live via Periscope for those community members who are unable to attend in person.

All students, parents, educators, and community members are invited to provide testimony at public meetings. Individuals and representatives of organizations who wish to comment at a public meeting are asked to notify Board staff in advance by phone at (202) 741-0888 or by email at [email protected] no later than 48 hours in advance of the meeting. An electronic copy of testimony must be received no later than 48 hours prior to the meeting. Individuals are asked to furnish their names, addresses, telephone numbers, and organizational affiliation, if any. Individuals must also bring at least fifteen (15) copies of their written statements with them to the meeting.

The Committee of the Whole and the Committee on Education will hold a budget oversight hearing on the State Board of Education, Office of the Ombudsman for Public Education, and the Office of the Student Advocate at 11 am on Wednesday, March 27, 2019 in Hearing Room 123 of the John A. Wilson Building. The Committee invites the public to testify or submit written testimony. Persons wishing to testify are encouraged to bring 10–15 copies of their written testimony.

About the SBOE

The D.C. State Board of Education is an independent agency within the Government of the District of Columbia that advises the Office of the State Superintendent of Education (OSSE), the District’s state education agency. The State Board is comprised of nine elected representatives, each representing their respective wards, with one member representing D.C. at large, and two appointed student representatives. The State Board approves statewide education policies and sets academic standards, while OSSE oversees education within the District and manages federal education funding.
