State Board to Discuss Barriers Faced by Students Experiencing Homelessness

Friday, February 28, 2020
Expanding Latinx Teacher Workforce also on Agenda

Washington, DC—The DC State Board of Education (SBOE) will hold its monthly working session on Wednesday, March 4, 2020, at 5:00 pm at 441 Fourth St. NW. The working session will be streamed live via Periscope for community members who are unable to attend in person.

The State Board is continuing its exploration into the barriers faced by students and families experiencing homelessness. Federal and District law attempts to ensure that students with insecure housing are able to continue their educations, but in practice, it can be a daily challenge to move across the city to attend school.  The State Board will be discussing a draft resolution that includes recommendations for additional action by the State Board and other agencies to better serve our families.

Following testimony received at its February Public Meeting, the State Board will also be reviewing a resolution related to its work related to attracting, maintaining and retaining the best teacher workforce in the country, with a particular focus on Latinx teachers. The State Board applauds the work already being done in this area by DC Public Schools and the public charter sector and encourages additional support for these efforts by the mayor and Council.

Finally, the State Board will also review its equity statement to ensure that the tenets adopted in May 2018 are being fulfilled. Regular review and discussion of an agency’s pledge to equity are important reminders of those commitments.

While working sessions are open to the public, individuals and representatives of organizations are not permitted to speak or participate. Individuals and representatives of organizations may submit written testimony for consideration by the State Board at any time. Written testimony must be submitted by email ([email protected]) at least 48 hours in advance of the meeting, in order to be included in the official record. Materials received after that time will be included in the next official meeting record. To review the agenda and submitted testimony and presentations, please visit the SBOE meeting documents site.
