Washington, DC—The DC State Board of Education (SBOE) will hold its monthly public meeting on Wednesday, June 17, 2020, at 5:30 pm. As the COVID-19 (Coronavirus) outbreak continues to spread globally, the State Board is taking the necessary precautions to ensure the safety of our members, staff, and public. Therefore, this meeting will be held as a video web conference. For the most up-to-date information on the District’s COVID-19 response, please visit coronavirus.dc.gov. Members of the public wishing to provide testimony during the public meeting can email the State Board at [email protected] by the close of business on Monday, June 15, 2020.
The State Board will take time during its public meeting to recognize Juneteenth—an American holiday commemorating the abolition of slavery in the United States. Since June 19, 1865, Juneteenth has become a celebration and tradition that commemorates and honors Black/African-American freedom, achievement, self-development, and respect for all cultures. The State Board urges all Washingtonians to pause on Friday, June 19, 2020, to reflect on the positive impact of Black/African-Americans and recommit to the fight for justice and equity.
The State Board will also recognize June as LGBTQ+ Pride Month in the nation’s capital. Although many in-person Pride events have been canceled worldwide this year, LGBTQ+ Washingtonians have been active in supporting the protests related to the murder of George Floyd and other Black Americans. Similarly, the history of the Pride celebrations began with people of color standing up to say “No more!” in New York City in June 1969. The State Board honors their legacy and the continued struggle for full civil rights for all Americans.
The State Board honors the 2019–20 Student Advisory Committee (SAC) and two Student Representatives, Dayja Burton, senior at McKinley Technology High School, and Alex O’Sullivan, sophomore at BASIS DC Public Charter School, for their accomplishments and service on key policy issues of importance to District students. The Student Advisory Committee was created to expand the influence that District students have on what happens with education policies impacting their lives daily. The State Board will also review recommendations from the final report from the Student Advisory Committee and hear testimony from student witnesses from across the District.
