OSSE Seeks Public Comment on Draft Social Studies Standards

Washington, D.C.—The current social studies standards in the District were last revised in 2006. The revision process, which began in April 2020, presented an opportunity for the District’s social studies standards to be culturally responsive and anti-racist, impart important social studies content in the early grades, strengthen student knowledge of democratic principles and values, and promote civic engagement. 

State Board Welcomes New Director Bernice D. Butler

Washington, D.C.—The District of Columbia State Board of Education (SBOE) welcomes a new Executive Director, Bernice D. Butler. Butler has had an extensive career in the public sector, with over 14 years of experience in local government and education advocacy. She most recently served as the Director of Network and Organizational Effectiveness at the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, responsible for coordinating its state policy network, the State Priorities Partnership.

SR22-14 On Approval of Amendments to the District of Columbia’s Community Service High School Graduation Requirement

Resolution passed on November 16, 2022 that puts approves the District’s Emergency and Proposed Regulation to change the community service graduation requirement in Section, 2203, Chapter 22, Subtitle A, of Title 5, of the District of Columbia Municipal Regulations (DCMR) as proposed by the State Superintendent. This resolution is accompanied by its equity statement and Student Advisory Committee (SAC) statement.
