Emily Gasoi

Emily Gasoi began her career as a classroom teacher in 1995 and has been a passionate teacher of children and adults ever since. Early in her career, Emily worked with MacArthur award winning educator, Deborah Meier, to found the now internationally recognized Mission Hill School in Boston. After leaving Mission Hill School in 2004, Emily split her time between DC and Philadelphia, earning a doctorate in Educational Leadership from the University of Pennsylvania. She earned “Dissertation with Distinction” in 2012 for her research identifying conditions and practices within schools that foster a strong culture of school-based accountability.

From 2010-2015, Emily worked with Center for Inspired Teaching as a course instructor, mentor, and researcher.  In 2015, Emily co-founded Artful Education, a consulting practice that works with schools and educational organizations to strengthen practices related to creative teaching and learning. Emily is also an adjunct professor at Georgetown University in the Program for Education, Inquiry, and Justice.

Emily has published numerous op-eds and articles on topics ranging from educating for democracy and teacher-initiated professional development to the importance of safeguarding our system of public education from forces of privatization. She recently collaborated with Deborah Meier to co-author the book, These Schools Belong to You and Me, Why We Can’t Afford to Abandon Our Public Schools.

Emily currently lives in Ward 1’s Mount Pleasant with her husband, Winston and their daughter, Frankie. Adopted from Taiwan at 15 months, Frankie now attends Washington Yu Ying PCS, a Chinese language immersion school in Northeast DC.
