Experts Weigh in on #ESSA / State Board Highlights Teacher of the Year

Friday, February 10, 2017

Washington, DC - The DC State Board of Education (SBOE) will hold its monthly public meeting on February 15, 2017 at 5:30 p.m. in the Old Council Chambers at 441 4th Street NW. The State Board will honor the exceptional efforts of Ms. Elizabeth Dewhurst as the District’s 2017 Teacher of the Year. Ms. Dewhurst is a reading intervention teacher at Stuart-Hobson Middle School.

The State Board will continue its diligent work related to the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA). During this public meeting, the SBOE will hear from two panels of policy experts regarding their views on the draft ESSA accountability plan. Public comment on the draft plan, released by the Office of the State Superintendent of Education (OSSE), continues through March 3, 2017. Board members look to build on public feedback submitted at ESSA community meetings this week co-hosted by the State Board and OSSE. Tremendous turnout from parents, teachers, and community members in Wards 1, 2 and 3 led to some outstanding feedback for OSSE as they make revisions to the draft plan. The State Board encourages you to review the plan and bring your voice and ideas to the discussion.

ESSA implementation begins in the 2017-18 school year. The SBOE will continue to collect public input on ESSA at upcoming community meetings during the rest of February. You may view an updated schedule here. A special SBOE vote on the final plan is scheduled for Wednesday, March 22, 2017. For more information about ESSA, please visit sboe.dc.gov/essa and osse.dc.gov/essa.

The SBOE will also hear from experts regarding a recommendation from the Office of the State Superintendent of Education to update the District-wide physical education standards. These academic standards will cover all students from pre-kindergarten through high school age. Physical education standards were last approved in 2008. You can read about the proposed changes and how they will develop physically literate students who have the knowledge, skills and confidence to enjoy a lifetime of healthful physical activity.

Individuals and representatives of organizations who wish to comment at a public meeting are asked to notify Board staff in advance by phone at (202) 741-0888 or by email at [email protected]. Individuals should furnish their names, addresses, telephone numbers, and organizational affiliation, if any, by the close of business on Monday, February 13, 2017 and bring fifteen (15) copies of their written statements with them to the meeting and are encouraged to submit one (1) electronic copy in advance.
