Overview of #ESSA Statewide Plan and Leadership Elections on Agenda at January Public Meeting

(Washington, DC)- The DC State Board of Education (SBOE) will hold its monthly public meeting on January 18, 2017 at 5:30 pm in the Old Council Chambers at 441 4th Street, NW. Board members will continue their important work related to the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA). During this meeting, the Office of the State Superintendent (OSSE) will provide an overview of the major components of the consolidated statewide plan required by ESSA. In addition to school accountability, the consolidated plan includes sections on long-term goals, consultation and performance management, academic assessments, and supporting educators and students.

ESSA implementation begins in the 2017-18 school year. Working together, the SBOE and OSSE are continuing to gather input on the design and development of the new accountability system. Interested parties can still submit testimony regarding ESSA. The SBOE welcomes comments from students, parents, teachers, school leaders, organizations and residents. The SBOE will also vote to elect a new president and vice president for 2017-2018. The members of the SBOE will formulate a structure for upcoming policy, assessment, student advisory, governance, and engagement committees to help achieve the goals of increasing equity and academic excellence in public education here in the District.
