Ombudsman and Student Advocate Offices Present Annual Reports

Special education and student safety remain major priorities

Washington, D.C. - The DC State Board of Education (SBOE) will hold its monthly public working session on Wednesday, November 6, 2019 at 5:30 pm in the Old Council Chambers at 441 Fourth St. NW. The Office of the Ombudsman for Public Education and the Office of the Student Advocate will present annual reports for FY 2018-2019, highlighting their efforts in assisting District families, while providing recommendations for the District’s education system. The public meeting will air live on District Knowledge Network (DKN) and will be streamed live via Periscope for community members who are unable to attend in person.

The Office of the Ombudsman for Public Education (OMB) is eager to present the OMB Annual Report for School Year 2018–2019. In this year’s report, Ombudsman Serena Hayes will focus on the office’s impact over the last year, offer an in-depth analysis of the data collected, and provide recommendations related to special education.

Led by Chief Student Advocate Dan Davis, the Office of the Student Advocate (OSA) supports students and families in their advocacy through parent education, one-on-one training, and resource support. The OSA Annual Report for School Year 2018–19, focuses on student safety, special education workshops, and creating pipelines for diverse communities.

State Board members will also engage on key policy issues that have been raised in their committees.

While working sessions are open to the public, individuals and representatives of organizations are not permitted to speak or participate. Individuals and representatives of organizations may submit written testimony for consideration by the State Board at any time. Written testimony must be submitted by email ([email protected]) at least 48 hours in advance of the meeting, in order to be included in the official record.
