Washington, DC - The DC State Board of Education (SBOE) will hold a special public meeting on Wednesday, March 22, 2017, at 5:30 pm in the Old Council Chambers at 441 4th Street NW. The State Board will vote on the approval of the final state plan for the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) that was issued by the Office of the State Superintendent (OSSE) today.
The State Board heard feedback and testimony at its March 15 public meeting from District residents on the accountability plan. This public testimony occurred on the heels of last month’s nearly 300 parents, students, teachers, and community members who attended our ESSA community meetings held in all eight wards.
ESSA gives the District more flexibility in advancing educational excellence and providing assistance to schools so that each student has the opportunity for success. ESSA implementation begins in the 2017-18 school year. For more information about ESSA, please visit sboe.dc.gov/essa and osse.dc.gov/essa.
The State Board of Education provides policy leadership, support, advocacy, and oversight of public education to ensure that every student is valued and learns the skills and knowledge necessary to become informed, competent, and contributing global citizens.
