State Board to Discuss PARCC Results, Every Student Succeeds Act

Friday, September 16, 2016

Washington, DC- The DC State Board of Education (SBOE) will hold its monthly public meeting on September 21, 2016 at 5:30 pm in the Old Council Chambers at 441 4th Street, NW.

The SBOE will begin the meeting by voting on two resolutions related to the agency’s budget. The first will approve the agency’s fiscal year 2017 program budget and the second will approve a fiscal year 2018 need for appropriations level to ensure the services of the State Board, Office of the Ombudsman for Public Education and the Office of the Student Advocate can continue to thrive.

The Office of the State Superintendent of Education (OSSE) will be presenting information related to the District’s school year 2015-2016 Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC) exams. As the State Board noted when the scores were released, while District students did show growth overall last year, gaps still exist between racial groups, English-learners, and students in special education.

The State Board will also hear from the National Association of State Boards of Education and the Council of Chief State School Officers on the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA). The presentation will focus on what implementation challenges and successes other states have found in their process. The SBOE and OSSE are partners in the effort to develop a new school accountability plan in the District. More information can be found at http://sboe.dc.gov/essa.
