State Board to hear update from OSSE on D.C. Science Assessment

Thursday, August 29, 2019
Will discuss Student Advisory Committee and ESSA Task Force recommendations

Washington, D.C. - The D.C. State Board of Education (SBOE) will hold its regular monthly working session on Wednesday, September 4 at 5 p.m. in Room 1114 at 441 4th Street NW. State Board members will reconvene after their month-long summer recess to hear an update from the Office of the State Superintendent of Education (OSSE) on the D.C. Science Assessment and review the recommendations from its Student Advisory Committee (SAC) and Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) Task Force. The working session will be streamed live via Periscope for community members who are unable to attend in person.

The D.C. Science Assessment is an online test that is designed to ensure that students in the District are on track compared to the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS). OSSE will be presenting to SBOE on the design of the assessment and how it will be scored. D.C. Science is composed of tasks built around scientific phenomena as well as engineering design challenges. The tasks address NGSS’s three-dimensional approach to the application of knowledge and practice—an approach that integrates Disciplinary Core Ideas, Science and Engineering Practices, and Crosscutting Concepts.

In July, State Board members accepted final reports from the School Year 2018–19 Student Advisory Committee (SAC) and the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) Task Force. SBOE will discuss the recommendations from both reports at the September working session.

State Board members will also continue to engage on key policy issues that have been raised in their working groups: teacher retention, well-rounded education, social studies standards, and research.

While working sessions are open to the public, individuals and representatives of organizations are not permitted to speak or participate. Individuals and representatives of organizations may submit written testimony for consideration by the State Board at any time. Written testimony must be submitted by email at [email protected] at least 48 hours in advance of the meeting in order to be included in the official record. Materials received after that time will be included in the next official meeting record. To review the agenda and submitted testimony and presentations, please visit the SBOE meeting documents site.
