State Board to lay groundwork for policy priorities

Will review ESSA Task Force and Student Advisory Committee recommendations

Washington, DC - The D.C. State Board of Education (SBOE) will hold its regular monthly working session on Tuesday, July 2 at 5 pm in Room 1114 at 441 Fourth St. NW. State Board members will discuss long-term priorities and review the recommendations from its Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) Task Force and Student Advisory Committee (SAC). The working session will be streamed live via Periscope for community members who are unable to attend in person.

At the June working session, OSSE brought a proposal to the State Board for including high school growth in the STAR Framework. State Superintendent Hanseul Kang and her team reviewed the proposal with Board members and participated in a lively question-and-answer session. The proposal would establish a growth measure in the STAR Framework for District high schools after community input on the proposal, contingent on approval from the SBOE and the U.S. Department of Education.  

Over the last few months, State Board members have convened monthly in working groups to discuss key issues and focus areas that the State Board has identified as priorities. These discussions have provided members the opportunity to share thoughts, recommendations, and potential next steps for SBOE. At the July working session, members will review proposals from these groups in the key policy focus areas of teacher retention, well-rounded education, research, and social studies standards.

Earlier this month, State Board members accepted final reports from the School Year 2018–19 Student Advisory Committee (SAC) and the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) Task Force. SBOE will discuss the recommendations from both reports at the July working session to determine next steps by SBOE.

While working sessions are open to the public, individuals and representatives of organizations are not permitted to speak or participate. Individuals and representatives of organizations may submit written testimony for consideration by the State Board at any time. Written testimony must be submitted by email at [email protected] at least 48 hours in advance of the meeting in order to be included in the official record. About the SBOE

The D.C. State Board of Education is an independent agency within the Government of the District of Columbia that advises the Office of the State Superintendent of Education (OSSE), the District’s state education agency. The State Board is comprised of nine elected representatives, each representing their respective wards, with one member representing D.C. at large, and two appointed student representatives. The State Board approves statewide education policies and sets academic standards, while OSSE oversees education within the District and manages federal education funding.
