The D.C. State Board of Education is an independent agency with three separate offices. Where would you like to go? Please select below.

The State Board is responsible for approving state-level regulations and advises the Office of the State Superintendent (OSSE) on educational matters.

The Office of the Student Advocate supports students, parents, and families in their advocacy through parent education, one-on-one coaching, resource supports, and trainings in order to amplify the voices of the families.

The Office of the Ombudsman receives education-related concerns and complaints from families of current or prospective public-school students. The Ombudsman strives to resolve families’ education-related concerns and complaints by providing information, coaching, attending or facilitating school meetings, and conducting mediations.

NOTICE 1: As the coronavirus outbreak continues to spread globally, the State Board is taking the necessary precautions to ensure the safety of our members, staff, and public. Guidance from the mayor recommends that non-essential gatherings be postponed or canceled and has encouraged agencies to adjust their operating status to permit telework and social distancing if possible. Therefore, the State Board has shifted to telework and this meeting will be a web conference.

All students, parents, educators, and community members are invited to provide testimony at public meetings, which are held the third Wednesday of every month at 5:30 pm. Individuals who wish to comment at a public meeting are asked to notify Board staff in advance by filling out our form no later than 48 hours in advance of the meeting.

Social Studies Standards Revision The State Board, in partnership with the Officer of the State Superintendent of Education (OSSE), has begun its review and update of the District's social studies standards. The revision process presents an opportunity for the District’s social studies standards to be culturally responsive, anti-racist, to impart important social studies content in the early grades, strengthen student knowledge of democratic principles and values, and promote civic engagement.

Applications Open for the SY2022–23 Student Advisory Committee (SAC) The SAC serves as the voice of students in the State Board’s work. They are consulted on issues of policy before the Board. Each year, the SAC sends the State Board a report on a matter of importance to District students, providing recommended next steps for the State Board to review and implement. If you're a sophomore, junior, or senior at a D.C. traditional public or public charter school, be sure to apply by June 15, 2022!
