The State Board is responsible for approving state-level regulations and advises the Office of the State Superintendent (OSSE) on educational matters.

The Office of the Student Advocate supports students, parents, and families in their advocacy through parent education, one-on-one coaching, resource supports, and trainings in order to amplify the voices of the families.

The Office of the Ombudsman receives education-related concerns and complaints from families of current or prospective public-school students. The Ombudsman strives to resolve families’ education-related concerns and complaints by providing information, coaching, attending or facilitating school meetings, and conducting mediations.

Statement on the Lifting of the Indoor Mask Mandate

The State Board of Education (SBOE) has heard concerns from families and schools about the abrupt end to the mask mandate on Monday, November 22. Families are worried that the end to the mandate in much of the public sphere, but maintaining it in schools and childcare settings, does not provide enough protection for children, especially those under five years old that are unable to receive a vaccine.

State Board Invites OSSE to Provide Updates on Social Studies Standards

Washington, D.C.—The D.C. State Board of Education (SBOE) will hold its monthly working session on Wednesday, February 1 at 5:00 p.m. The working session will be held in-person; however, in-person attendance will be limited to members and staff of the State Board, as well as invited guests.

State Board Hears from Healthy School Facilities Panel

Washington, D.C.—The D.C. State Board of Education (State Board) will hold its monthly public meeting on Wednesday, January 18, 2023, at 5:30 p.m. The public meeting will be held in-person in the Old Council Chambers in the Marion S. Barry, Jr.

Testify at our next public meeting

All students, parents, educators, and community members are invited to provide testimony at public meetings, which are held the third Wednesday of every month at 5:30 pm. Individuals who wish to comment at a public meeting are asked to notify Board staff in advance by filling out our form no later than 48 hours in advance of the meeting.
